Desperate Steven Gerrard is getting his excuses in early and pleading for more debt to be racked up next month.

The spotlight is increasingly falling on the former Liverpool youth coach as Sevco’s season falls apart in spectacular fashion.

Two defeats in Glasgow from an Aberdeen team that Graeme Murty used to beat for fun have thrown up some uncomfortable comparisons.

Getting knocked out of the Europa League with one win in six matches against clubs that were forced to sack their managers won’t be anything for Gerrard to crow about when he looks for his next job.

Just a fortnight ago Sevco were at the top of the table with the celebrations from Tynecastle now just another footnote in The Banter Years.

Dave King is currently trying to raise £19m to avoid a stint in Barlinnie but with the spotlight on his own managerial ability Gerrard needs his board to provide him with fresh funds.

The reality is that we had to make wholesale changes in the summer on a small budget,” he explained to the Daily Record.

We had to try and find loans and frees and in important areas we had to try and spend some money.

The facts are that, net, we?probably spent around £4.5 -£5.5m. I’m not sure you can do magical and wonderful things in one? window with that.

If you look at the ones we added, the majority of them have given us an awful lot. They’re doing really well and I’m delighted with what they’ve brought but without naming names, there’s two or three who can give more and step up more.”

Sevco’s accounts to June 2018 revealed losses of £14.7m.

The cost of Gerrard and his backroom team is believed to be close to £4m/ year, with no meaningful retail income coming in and Sports Direct due costs and damages there isn’t likely to be much left in Gerrard’s transfer war-chest.
