Filip Benkovic will be out of action for at least a month as he waits on the results of scans taken after the 3-0 win over Hamilton.

Yesterday The Sun broke the news of the injury with today’s edition claiming that the defender will be out of action for at least a month.

With Dedryck Boyata set to miss his third consecutive match tonight when St Johnstone visit Celtic Park the hoops are entering a vital stage of the season without their first choice central defenders.

The Sun reports:

Benkovic hopes his season isn’t over as he awaits results of a scan, but he is expected to miss at least a month.

Brendan Rodgers, who has targeted Borussia Dortmund right-back Jeremy Toljan, could now look to add a centre-half before the transfer window closes on Thursday.

With Dedryck Boyata also injured, the Hoops boss is currently without his first-choice pairing.

Celtic hadn’t planned to add a new stopper, but are now likely to explore their options.

Kris Ajer and Jozo Simunovic are expected to start in central defence tonight with the injuries to Benkovic and Boyata possibly ruling out a loan move for Jack Hendry. With Kieran Tierney still injured three of Celtic’s first choice defenders are currently on the treatment table.

Last week Rodgers did say that he was unlikely to add any central defenders but the news on Benkovic has forced a rethink with the Croat u-21 internationalist likely to return to Leicester for part of his rehabilitation.
