Celtic close to midfielder deal

Scott Brown is set to sign a new two year Celtic contract after Western Melbourne gave up on luring the midfielder to their inaugural season in the A-League.

Celtic has given Brown time to explore other options for what is likely to be the final playing contract of his career with reports of offers from the USA and UAE as well as from Australia.

Brown joined Celtic from Hibs in 2007 for a Scottish record fee of £4.4m and is now poised to complete his playing days in Glasgow.

Football agent Lou Sticca, part of the Western Melbourne consortium told the Daily Record: “We are delighted for Scott to extend his glorious career at Celtic.

While we are disappointed Scott will not be joining our inaugural campaign we fully understand what Celtic means to Scott and what Scott means to Celtic.”

The cynical will view the timing of this deal suspiciously as Celtic struggle to bring in new faces to key areas during the transfer window.

Brown’s inclusion in the side has been blamed at times this season for slowing play down but that claim is unfair when fans were screaming for him to be introduced as RB Salzburg toyed with Celtic during the first half of December’s Europa League tie.

With Mikael Lustig likely to be leaving at the end of the season and Craig Gordon displaced by Scott Bain allowing Brown to leave would take a massive amount of experience out of the Celtic side.
