Celtic’s transfer activities took an unexpected sinister turn last night as Maryan Shved was discussed following the 4-0 win over St Mirren.

Strong interest in the 21-year-old winger emerged in the Ukranian media on Wednesday morning and seemed believable backed up by quotes from an official of Karpaty Lviv.

Rarely these days are Celtic linked with players that their fans have heard of, YouTube and Google uncovered promising details about Shved. A centre-half or right-back would have been preferred but in general the reaction was favourable, especially since it would be a permanent transfer.

After beating St Mirren Brendan Rodgers was naturally asked about the latest transfer speculation, his reply was far from standard.

Within 112 words he mentioned ‘the club’ three times, clearly distancing himself from the negotiations. When he added that he didn’t know a great deal about Shved it was clear that this was a matter that he wanted in the public domain, mentioning millions of wingers confirmed his view on the direction ‘the club’ was taking in the transfer market.

The Sun reported:

The club have been in contact with Maryan’s representatives and he’s a talented young player for the future. They’ll look to get the deal done and he’ll probably be out on loan and in during the summer.

It’s something that’s come to the club through circumstance. He’s been watched and looked at but I can’t say I know a great deal about him. But what I have seen he’s a talent and something that will probably benefit the club in the future.

We’ve got about a million wingers and don’t need another one but he’s a talent and in the summer we’ll probably lose wingers and he’ll look to come in.

Supporters will have their own idea of who is operating behind the manager on behalf of ‘the club’. Why £1.7m is being put towards another winger when the need for a right-back is glaringly obvious and has been for at least 12 months is a complete mystery.

When Rodgers took over from Ronny Deila in 2016 having control of the playing side was non-negotiable, that included transfer dealings. There would be no more Carlton Cole’s Colin Kazim Richards or Stefan Scepovic’s landing in his dressing room, not even a Paddy McCourt.

Last night’s comments suggest that others are back to bringing players into the club, the logical conclusion to this development is one that Celtic fans would far rather avoid. Despite some clearly evident faults overwhelmingly they are still of the view that #inbrendanwetrust.
