Chris Sutton believes that Celtic face a massive summer rebuilding programme with FIVE first team regulars moving on as well as the two January loanees.

The January transfer window has been viewed as the time to reinforce for the summer European qualifiers but so far Vakoun Issouf Bayo is the only permanent signing that Celtic have brought in.

Rodgers faces building a brand new defence with only Kieran Tierney reporting back for pre-season training while two of the older outfield players have huge question marks over their future.

“It’s no surprise all of these loan signings have got Celtic fans a little worried about the future,” Sutton told the Daily Record.

“They already have Filip Benkovic, Timothy Weah and Oliver Burke only at the club until the end of the season and there’s talk about interest in Scott McTominay and James McCarthy on short-term deals.

“But when you look at the entire Celtic squad right now, it’s clear there is going to be a massive rebuilding job done next summer.

“Brendan Rodgers has already said he’s not looking for a central defender in this window, so that means he’ll need to recruit two right away for the European qualifiers, regardless of what competition they are in.

“The loans will return to their parent clubs, Dedryck Boyata will leave and I am becoming more and more convinced this will be Scott Brown’s last season at Parkhead.

“Mikael Lustig will probably go, I’d imagine Scott Sinclair’s future beyond this year is in doubt and Olivier Ntcham is likely to be sold at the end of the campaign, if not sooner.

“If those players depart Rodgers faces a massive rebuilding job in the summer- casting doubt over whether he will be around to see it through.

When he took over from Ronny Deila in 2016 he achieved Champions League qualification with largely the squad that he inherited.

Getting the best out of James Forrest, Leigh Griffiths, Tom Rogic, Mikael Lustig and Brown transformed the team with Kolo Toure, Scott Sinclair and Moussa Dembele helping the side through against Hapoel Beer Sheva.

Ryan Cristie, James Forrest, Callum McGregor, Tom Rogic and Kieran Tierney are all on long term contracts but there are major doubts over whether half of the current first XI will be around at the start of next season.
