Two days after the utterly pointless referee summit at Perth Celtic were on the wrong end of the first honest mistake of 2019.

Midway through the second half, with Celtic leading 2-0 Oliver Burke turned on the edge of the penalty box and fired in a snap shot. Airdrie United keeper David Hutton parried the shot with Scott Sinclair ready in anticipation to tuck away the rebound.

The Celtic forward had two Airdrie United defenders in front of him as he pounced on the loose ball but incredibly assistant referee Ralph Gordon put his flag up for offside. He saw something that didn’t happen!

That strike would have given Sinclair his second hat-trick in three matches but the incompetence of a match official denied him the match ball.

In the end Celtic won 3-0 to go through to the next round but that shouldn’t take any attention away from an assistant referee who can’t do his job.

Perhaps he is of the thinking that Celtic are good enough to overcome the regular marginal decisions that go against them with no consequences for the match officials involved.
