Australia’s disastrous Asian Cup campaign came to an end tonight with Graham Arnold heading home early to face the music.

A 1-0 defeat to hosts UAE today in the quarter-final stage brought an end to a five match campaign that brought two wins against Palestine and Syria as the Socceroos struggled to make any impact..

Arnold insisted on the early release of his European players with 11 days needed before the opening group match ensuring an unhappy group of players concerned about returning to fight for their club places.

Tom Rogic made it clear that he felt he could have stayed for another two days at Celtic. The midfielder isn’t known for disciplinary problems but picked up two bookings in four matches to miss today’s defeat from the UAE due to suspension.

Brendan Rodgers can expect Rogic to return to Lennoxtown over the weekend and be in contention for the double header against St Johnstone.
