Steven Gerrard has admitted that he is reacting to transfer speculation by phoning up clubs linked to Sevco players!

Most managers let speculation slip over their head until a bid is on the table but it seems that Gerrard revels in interest from other clubs in his players. Tellingly the so-called interest is in the players that he inherited and not his own star signings.

Last Tuesday the Daily Record reported that OGC Nice ‘were preparing an £8m bid’ for Alfredo Morelos which brought a tetchy response from the rookie boss as he prepared for defeat at Kilmarnock.

In France no one was remotely interested in the story despite Gerrard’s quotes.

Yesterday, ahead of facing Livingston the Express reported that Southampton may consider an £8m offer for James Tavernier, the figure of £8m seems popular.

They’re not looking, we made a call about it this morning and they’re not,” Gerrard explained to The Sun about Southampton’s interest.

I think there will be talk of Tav and talk of Alfredo before the window closes but the reality is there hasn’t been a respectable bid for any of our players so far.

Will one come? Possibly. I’ll have to answer the question when it does.”

Sevco’s accounts predicted a shortfall of £4m for the current season which was before Jermain Defoe and Steve Davis added £100,000/week to the wage bill.
