The Green Brigade sent a message of sympathy and support to Flamengo following Friday’s fire tragedy.

Ten life’s were lost at the hostel area of the club’s training complex as a fire took hold in a dormitory where some of their youth players were sleeping.

The tragedy has shocked Brazil where Flamengo are the best supported club in the country with Zico among their most famous former players.

According to the BBC:

That working class and black support base saw the club labelled as the ‘urubu’ – the vulture. It was meant as a racial slur. But in the manner of these things, it was adopted as a motive of pride. Flamengo’s training ground, where Friday’s tragedy took place, is the ‘Ninho do Urubu’ – the vulture’s nest.

Ten players died at the scene on Friday morning with three more taken to hospital for treatment. One victim was said to have 30% burns.

Since the fire Brazil has been a nation in mourning with social media full of expressions of sympathy for the victims and their families.

Last season Flamengo finished the season in second place in the championship but right now football is secondary to the grieving of families who have lost teenagers who were chasing their football dreams.
