It wasn’t a title clincher but when Scott Brown’s shot hit the net via Alex Bruce’s arm it certainly felt like Celtic had clinched their eighth successive title.

Across the weekend all of the clubs in the top six except Celtic and Kilmarnock dropped points giving Brendan Rodgers’ side the chance to open up an eight point lead in ‘the tightest championship race in years’.

That tag had whipped many into a frenzy, believing that their teams had improved when the reality was that during the first part of the season Celtic’s away form saw then fall back towards the pack. On Christmas Day Celtic had recorded just three away wins in the SPFL with points dropped at St Mirren, Motherwell and Livingston among others.

It hadn’t been much fun for the away support but two late goals to break down St Johnstone a fortnight showed the strength and belief of the champions with those qualities tested again at Kilmarnock.

The late goal brought some fans out of the stand to celebrate with the players with the celebrations inside the ground continuing through to and beyond the final whistle.

No doubt the train back to Glasgow Central from Kilmarnock was a lively affair with the celebrations continuing inside the station as the fans got together before finally departing to get their final connections home.

Back in April 2012 the title winning run started at Rugby Park, no trophies were handed out after yesterday’s result but as the fans inside Glasgow Central knew a hugely significant weekend had been completed with the gap at the top stretched to eight points.
