Celtic have sent Youssouf Mulumbu on loan to Kilmarnock nine days before they face Sevco in the Scottish Cup.

The midfielder joined Celtic as a free agent at the end of the August transfer window but has only made three appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ side. Ryan Christie’s emergence in the autumn shuttled Mulumbu further down the pecking order with the 32-year-old struggling to make the substitute bench.

Despite having a bottom six budget Kilmarnock are sitting in third place in the SPFL table just six points behind Celtic. As he proved in recent seasons with Christie, Brendan Rodgers isn’t afraid to send players on loan to title rivals although naturally Mulumbu won’t be available to face Celtic.

On Monday the midfielder played his first Reserve League match of the season- a 4-1 win over Partick Thistle- and is expected to be in the Kilmarnock squad to face Hearts tomorrow night. In midweek Killie visit Dundee before facing the Ibrox club in the Scottish Cup on February 9 followed by a visit from Celtic eight days later.
