Neil Lennon has revealed that he was sounded out by Leicester City about the prospect of becoming caretaker manager.

The Irishman has a successful spell with the Midlands side under Martin O’Neill and remains highly rated by supporters.

Claude Puel’s job has been under threat for months with the axe falling on Sunday morning on the back of a 4-1 defeat from Crystal Palace in front of the BT Sport cameras.

That triggered an incredible series of events involving two Irishman with Lennon explaining that he could have had a role at the King Power Stadium.

The whole thing flipped around,” he explained to The Sun. “I spoke briefly to Jon Rudkin [Leicester City’s director of football] and he said he was bearing me in mind if they were thinking of an interim manager.

But it was only a five minute chat with him and I think that already by that stage they wanted a permanent manager in.”

Events took a dramatic turn on Monday when it became clear that Brendan Rodgers wanted to go immediately to Leicester- with Celtic turning to Lennon.

Negotiations throughout Tuesday resulted in an early evening announcement that Rodgers had joined Leicester with Lennon coming in on a caretaker basis at Celtic.

Last night Lennon made a winning start, guiding Celtic to a 2-1 win at Hearts with Rodgers in charge of Leicester for the first time on Sunday when they travel to Watford.
