In an interview for the Leicester City website Brendan Rodgers has given more detail about his departure from Celtic than he did in his patronising farewell message on the hoops website.

After losing 1-0 to Valencia last week the Irishman claimed that he was very proud of the players despite bowing out of the Europa League.

As Leicester lost 4-1 at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday evening it looked ominous for Claude Puel with predictable speculation that Rodgers was in contention to take over at Leicester.

That speculation went up a notch on Sunday morning when Leicester sacked the Frenchman but the prospect of Rodgers ditching people that he claimed would be ‘friends for life’ seemed remote ahead of a critical week as Celtic chased a Treble Treble.

Incredibly the former Liverpool boss was plotting his exit, only he knows when contact was first made with Leicester, last night he told their fans that he would give his life for the club!

I’m just delighted to be here,” the new Leicester boss told his club website. “I think there was a number of reasons [why I joined]. I was certainly in no hurry to leave Celtic. Celtic is a club that’s a huge club worldwide, a renowned club, and I loved working with the players there.

We were on a journey of great success over these last years but when the opportunity came to talk to Leicester and I was able to analyse it, it allowed me to think that I’d probably achieved and taken the club maybe at Celtic as far as I could at this moment.”

In the space of one day or perhaps even a week Rodgers has torched what could have been an incredible Celtic legacy.

Gordon Strachan never gushed with insincerity during his four years at Celtic and left with respect and the appreciation of most supporters. It’s hard to imagine any scenario in which Rodgers will be held in similar esteem by Celtic supporters.
