Kieran Tierney is only ‘football fitness’ away from a return to first team action.

The defender hasn’t played since the Europa League tie against RB Salzburg on December 13 but Celtic fans were encouraged to see him back in training on Monday following his hip injury.

Tierney was out of the gym but training on his own at the start of the week but rejoined the first team squad in training today.

It remains to be seen if Tierney is included in the squad to face St Johnstone on Sunday but Jeremy Toljan was given 45 minutes against the Perth side last week despite less than 48 hours as a Celtic player and no game time with Borussia Dortmund.

Getting Tierney back in action would be a massive boost for Brendan Rodgers who was without his entire first choice defence at the final whistle of the 2-0 win over St Johnstone on Sunday.

Dedryck Boyata returned from a four match absence in midweek against Hibs while Toljan slotted in effortlessly at right-back.
