Alex McLeish has made a plea to support Scottish referees.

This morning a report in the Daily Record claimed that moves were afoot to bring in referees from outside Scotland as confidence and respect reaches rock bottom.

Although Celtic were credited with being behind the initiative almost every club and every manager in the top flight has spoken out about incredible decisions by referees and baffling actions from the Compliance Officer.

As a former club manager McLeish ought to sympathise with the bosses who are suffering on the front line but today he has been called in to back up his colleagues at Hampden.

“Give these guys a break and let’s get behind them,” the Scotland boss told the BBC. “There is absolutely no hiding place. It’s just the scrutiny.

You have social media, social networks . I feel for the referees and we have to try and help them in our own country. Lets encourage them and get them to be better.”

In 2010 a strike call from Scottish referees led to officials being flown in from Luxembourg and Israel to take charge of matches.

The current proposal seems to be aimed at bringing in officials from England and Wales but that seems certain to be resisted by Scottish based assistants who would have to support the in-coming officials.
