Kris Ajer watched Ajax beat Real Madrid then thought- what if?

The Dutch champions have a quarter-final tie in the Champions League to look forward to after a stunning 4-1 win away to Real Madrid which killed off their hopes of a fourth successive trophy win.

Over the last couple of seasons it has been assumed that the latter stages of that competition is for the rich leagues only but on Tuesday night that notion was blown apart.

With a group of ambitious young players mixed with wise signings Ajax are the talk of the continent with Ajer taking heart from the way that the Dutch side have made progress.

To have so many young players producing such a fine performance against a team that’s won the Champions League for the last three years was really impressive,” the Celtic defender told The Sun.

It shows that, if you have a really good structure for a number of years, then you can deliver good results. We can use that to inspire us because we have a really good pathway for our academy players at this club.

You have to respect that some clubs can afford to buy the top, top players but also if you build up the way Celtic have been doing, and the way Ajax have done, it’s possible to create a system where you’re not only selling great players but also bringing really good players through you can keep.

It was impressive to watch them against Real Madrid.”

Last season Ajax’s interest in Europe was ended by a Europa League play-off defeat from Rosenborg who have lost out three times to Celtic in the last two seasons.

This season’s Ajax side will be plundered by the top clubs during the close season but with Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain out of the competition there is every possibility that the Dutch champions could go further than the last eight of the Champions League.
