The Daily Record has provided a little more detail on the ‘deeply troubling episode’ involving Alex McLeish before Scotland played San Marino.

On Thursday the Glasgow based publisher led with a claim that the Scotland boss would be sacked within 24 hours with health grounds prominent in their reasoning.

Tucked underneath news of the imminent sacking was a mention of a ‘deeply troubling episode’ which triggered a number of theories across social media.

Even by his own standards McLeish’s speech has been noticeably slower over the last year with his post match reactions especially puzzling including the claim that Scotland started well in Kazakhstan despite being 2-0 down after 10 minutes.

Today the Record reveals:

The worrisome incident, which is understood to have happened during a pre-match team meeting, left onlooking players and coaching staff in a state of considerable confusion and Maxwell now needs to take McLeish’s health and safety into consideration along with his results and performances before making an official recommendation to the SFA board.

It’s believed these delicate discussions will now continue over the weekend before Maxwell will be in a position to put his findings to the rest of his fellow directors at some point next week.

Yesterday afternoon word emerged that no Thursday meeting with McLeish was planned but there was no outright denial of the story.

Had the Record got the substance wrong other publishers, mainly The Sun, would have made great capital out of an off the radar mistake but it seems only a matter of timing and level of pay off before Alan McRae goes in search of another new international manager.
