Decision time for Celtic over deal for 32-year-old

Mikael Lustig expects to find out this week whether his Celtic contract will be extended by 12 months.

The defender joined Celtic from Rosenborg in 2012, playing a key part in the club’s success since then but recent injuries and international commitments have effected his mobility.

Lustig signed a two year contract, with a one year option, in January 2017 with the extension option for the club likely to be on his current terms.

If the club were convinced about the player the option would have been taken before now but with uncertainty over who will be in charge next season the defender has been left in the dark about his future.

I will get a decision regarding the future next week,” he told the Daily Record. “It has been hard for some time now when I do not know about the future. I have been here [Celtic] for seven years and me and my family enjoy it.”

Lustig has been strongly linked with a return to Sweden after more than a decade away in Scotland and Norway.

AIK Stockholm and Malmo have both been linked with the 32-year-old who has denied that offers have been put on the table.

Asked if he already had offers on the table he said “No, but then I don’t really know how the rules are. But we have not spoken about any contract.

I mean, I have been quite open that I might want to finish my career in Sweden. Clearly I think about it, but I have a lot to do.”

Lustig has started 32 matches for Celtic this season.
