Davie Hay has launched a withering attack on Jeremy Toljan- comparing him with Cristian Gamboa.

All through January Celtic fans were looking for the signing of a right-back with a lot of hopes pinned on Atalanta’s Timothy Castagna.

That deal never looked like happening with a couple of other names popping up before Toljan was brought in on loan from Borussia Dortmund with a couple of hours remaining in the transfer window.

After returning from the World Cup Finals in Russia Mikael Lustig was way short of form with all three goals lost to AEK Athens in the Champions League qualifiers coming from his area of the park.

Toljan started his Celtic career with glowing praise but was substituted by Lustig late on at Tynecastle then watched the Swede start the Scottish Cup win over Hibs.

In the Evening Times Hay explained:

I can’t say that I was too surprised to see Mikael Lustig back in the starting XI for the win over Hibs last weekend. I just don’t think that Jeremy Toljan has offered too much in that right-back berth since coming into the club.

And I actually think that Lustig looks better for having had a bit of a break. You have to remember that Lustig has played at the World Cup too so he has not had much of a break at all.

Toljan actually reminds me a little bit of Cristian Gamboa.I  am not sure that he really shows anything that Celtic do not have at their disposal already. It will be interesting to see just what happens going forward now

The German is on loan until the end of the season, the same time as the contracts for Lustig and Gamboa expire.
