Steven Gerrard has finally given up on Alfredo Morelos.

All season the rookie boss has defended the striker whose disciplinary record now extends to five red cards with almost as many lucky escapes.

Gerrard has refused to ask Morelos to moderate his game claiming that the nastiness comes alongside his apparent ability in front of goal.

“I think I’ve gone above and beyond. I still love him, I still think he’s a fantastic and I’ll still protect him.

“But it gets to a line and he’s probably already above the line with me and I can’t defend it any more.

“The punishment will be financial and the money will go to the supporters that came here today. I think that’s only right.

“He let the club and his team-mates down again, I can’t defend him any more.

“I will recommend to the board that he’s fined a week’s wages and I will also recommend that money will go to the fans.

Morelos wasn’t even spoken to for three highlighted attacks during the December derby match which was refereed by John Beaton.

After 31 minutes of today’s match an elbow from the Colombian sent Scott Brown to the deck, although it was behind referee Bobby Madden’s back it was spotted by the linesman with a straight red card produced.
