Image for Lawwell joins forces with old foe in Amsterdam

Peter Lawwell met up with some familiar faces in Amsterdam today as the ECA, European Club Association, held their General Assembly.

Keeping a route into the Champions League appears to be the main aim as the bigger nations attempt to ensure that more money is split less ways as clubs from smaller, less glamorous nations are eased onto the sidelines.

Dariusz Mioduski of Legia Warsaw is the most striking face in that image with the Polish side involved in a dramatic clash with Celtic in 2014 that resulted in a 3-0 home win at Murrayfield after the Poles fielded an ineligible player.

Celtic and Legia are now standing side by side hoping to keep UEFA’s premier tournament open to as many countries as possible even if it requires four rounds of qualifiers to reach the same stage as the fourth placed teams in England, Germany, Spain and Italy.

Next season’s Champions League qualifiers begin on July 9 with Scotland away to Belgium in a European Championship qualifier on June 12.
