Mark Wilson has fired a warning shot at Peter Lawwell for the benefit of SPFL sponsors Ladbrokes.

The former Celtic defender teamed up with Alex Rae to promote the SPFL sponsors and decided to use the occasion to put pressure on the chief executive of the seven times champions.

Lawwell came up trumps from last week’s departure of Brendan Rodgers with Neil Lennon coming to the rescue with his availability and delivering two vital wins over Hearts and Hibs.

Rodgers’ actions in engineering his departure from Celtic has been trashed by supporters with last months messiah now referred to as a rat or a snake.

What went on in the background to bring an end to the ‘dream job’ of the Irishman is unlikely to ever make it’s way into the public domain but as they demonstrated at Tynecastle and Easter Road as long as the team is winning Celtic fans won’t ask too many questions.

Speaking to the Daily Record about the task ahead for Celtic Wilson said:

“The fact the new man, whether it’s Neil Lennon or anyone else, will need to change so many players makes it an even tougher job.

Not just for Lenny either – but for Lawwell. If Celtic go on to win this eighth title – which is looking likely – then you are talking about the nine-in-a-row year.

Peter and the club will need to throw a good bit of money at it because Celtic can’t afford to fail.

Rangers have put up a decent challenge this year and you’d think they will be stronger again next time.

It would be catastrophic if they didn’t do nine and the fans would never forgive the board if they didn’t splash the money.

The fans were going off their nuts because they felt the club didn’t invest to get to the Champions League. Can you imagine the response in the summer? It would be 10 times worse.

There will be criticism labelled at Lawwell. With Brendan leaving now, I don’t think people are pointing the finger at Peter but the fans will look back to the summer when there was a fallout between them.

The John McGinn thing keeps popping up and how it stuck in Brendan’s throat.

If there’s something similar in the summer then there’s only one guy who was there for two or three windows and that’s Peter.”

Lennon has been put in charge until the end of the season with Celtic one match away from reaching the Scottish Cup Final on May 25.

With European qualifiers starting in the second week in July there is very little time for a new manager to bring in new signings before the most critical matches of the 2019/20 season get underway.
