Brendan Rodgers is set to take a small step towards redeeming himself in the eyes of Celtic fans by adding Lee Congerton to his back-room team.

Of all the additions that he made to the staff at Celtic the appointment of the Head of Recruitment was the most criticised.

Congerton’s move to Celtic was instantly under criticism from Sunderland supporters who partly blamed their head of scouting for the demise of their club with a host of disastrous deals.

At the time the mantra of the Celtic support was ‘In Brendan we trust’ but that faith was put to the test over a couple of transfer windows.

January 2018 brought in Marvin Compper, Charly Musonda and Jack Hendry while the summer 2018 transfer window is likely to be viewed in future as the time relations between the dug-out and board-room broke down.

Congerton is on a different type of contract to Rodgers, Chris Davies, Kolo Toure and Glen Driscoll but according to a report in The Telegraph he is on his way to a King Power reunion.

Brendan Rodgers is targeting a summer reunion with Lee Congerton, Celtic’s head of recruitment.

Congerton is in line to join Rodgers at Leicester ahead of next season and would replace Eduardo Macia, whose contract at the King Power Stadium expires this summer.

Rodgers has already recruited three members of his former Celtic back-room staff – Chris Davies, Kolo Toure and Glen Driscoll – since his appointment last week and is poised to move for Congerton when the season finishes.

Congerton, 45, has also worked with Rodgers at Chelsea and is highly rated by the new Leicester manager.

During his time at Celtic only the arrivals of Olivier Ntcham and Odsonne Edouard could be considered a success with the arrival of Scott Bain last January unlikely to have been on the recommendation of Congerton.

Whatever happens Celtic will require major investment this summer with Filip Benkovic, Dedryck Boyata and Mikael Lustig out of contract in the summer as well as fringe defenders Cristian Gamboa and Emilio Izaguirre.
