Chris Sutton believes that Celtic are crying out for the return of Leigh Griffiths- when that will be is the big question.

The striker took time out from football in mid December with little known about his welfare or the state of his fitness.

Neil Lennon has dropped a few hints about a return to training but there has been nothing definite about seeing Griffiths back in action.

The burden of being the sole striker has taken it’s toll on Odsonne Edouard with the Frenchman scoring some vital goals while being dogged by injuries.

Oli Burke has tried his best as a makeshift striker but there’s little doubt that the return of Griffiths would be the real deal as far as strikers are concerned.

In the Daily Record Sutton explained:

The guy’s personal health comes before football matters and I think it’s been great that people have recognised that, especially his employers.

But all I am saying is that it will be sensational for Celtic and for Lennon if he can get himself back into the reckoning, preferably before this campaign comes to a conclusion.

Celtic have been missing that lethal instinct in the final third since Lennon returned and Griffiths has that.

No one is suggesting he is given the full responsibility of completing the treble Treble.

To be honest, you couldn’t really expect any player that has been out since last November to do that regardless of the reasons for their absence.

If you were coming back from an injury lay-off of that time, you wouldn’t be able to hit the ground running and it’ll be the same for Griffiths with the issues that he has had. Physically, it’s not possible.

But just the sight of him being back in action before the season closes will give Lennon, his team-mates and, most importantly, himself a brilliant pick-me-up going into the summer to start getting ready for 2019/20.

Lennon signed Griffiths for £1m from Wolves in January 2014 but the bulk of his 100 plus goals have been scored under Ronny Deila and Brendan Rodgers.
