Chris Sutton has slammed the decision to relegate James Forrest onto the bench for Scotland’s European Championship tie with San Marino as a joke.

The Celtic winger was one of six players dropped to the bench following the 3-0 defeat against Kazakhstan despite scoring the autumn goals that salvaged Scotland’s Nations League campaign.

Five goals against Albania and Israel took the heat off Alex McLeish but that counted for little as McLeish dropped Forrest to the bench.

Kenny McLean gave Scotland the perfect start by finding the net with a third minute header but thereafter McLeish’s side toiled to make any impact on the team that are officially the worst in world football.

Forrest replaced Stuart Armstrong in the 71st minute, three minutes later he burst forward to create the second goal for Jonny Russell but a 2-0 win over San Marino won’t deflect much of the criticism away from McLeish.
