The European Club Association (ECA) has confirmed that they are in talks with UEFA over changes to the Champions League.

Clubs from the big four nations are keen to tighten their stranglehold on the Champions League to ensure that the broadcasting money remains with the club’s that drive the deals.

A number of different agendas are being driven with some suggestions that weekend matches could be scheduled from 2024 but that would come into conflict with domestic broadcasting contracts.

The growing strength of English clubs bolstered by the massive TV deals agreed with Sky Sports has resulted in four of the last eight teams in the Champions League coming from England which is ironically a great marketing boost for rival broadcaster BT Sport.

The ECA stated:

A meeting was held today at UEFA Headquarters, “The House of European Football”, between the UEFA Executive Committee and the ECA Executive Board, which represents the full range of the ECA membership. The purpose of the meeting was to engage in an informal brainstorming session to allow for an initial sharing of ideas and exchange of views around UEFA Club Competitions post-2024

This is the first of a series of meetings amongst stakeholders in the months ahead, in order to allow for a detailed and proper consultation with the aim of drawing up concrete proposals that can be properly considered and analysed prior to any decisions being reached.

Celtic’s role in the talks is very much on the outside looking in, hoping to maintain the Champions route into the competition.

The last round of changes increased the Champions route from three rounds to four but Celtic’s co-efficient will almost certainly see them seeded in each of the qualifying rounds of they win this season’s SPFL.
