Barry Ferguson has urged the Ibrox board to stand by Steven Gerrard with next season’s trophy charge led by Jermain Defoe and Steve Davis!

Tuesday’s Scottish Cup defeat from Aberdeen has virtually ended this season’s delusion of a trophy heading to Ibrox sparking mild criticism of the former Liverpool u-18 coach.

Three times Derek McInnes has taken his side to Glasgow and handed Gerrard a lesson despite the massive imbalance in wages in favour of the Ibrox club.

Another year of failure is gradually sinking in with the cold hard facts suggesting that no domestic progress has been made despite Celtic losing their leading player and the manager that delivered seven out of seven trophies.

Several expensive legal bills are heading towards Dave King who turned to Close Brothers to see out the season but despite that dose of reality Ferguson wants to see the current regime backed again this summer.

He told the Daily Record:

Yes, results on the pitch have not been what he would have hoped for and there will be a lot of anger in the air for a good while after the performance against Aberdeen. But you have to look beyond the red mist and see the improvements that have been made since he came to the club.

To stop him in his tracks so soon into the job would be a major mistake. I’m convinced when I say I really don’t think he’s that far away from taking Rangers back to the top.

What he needs now is for Dave King and the board to show a bit of faith in him. To keep their nerve in the face of the current backlash and then dig even deeper into their pockets to help him get over the next hurdle.

It’s not as if he needs them to finance another huge summer rebuild. That hard work was done last summer which was one of the major reasons that this season has been so up and down. You can’t bring in 10 or 20 players at a time and expect everything to click into place all at once.

But now that this group has been together Gerrard will have had time to work out which of these players cannot match his own standards. And none of them will have any grounds for complaint if they get the tap on the shoulder when the season is over and are told their time is up. Like I said, this is Rangers. There is no place here for failure.”

Ferguson added: “When you had Steve Davis and Jermain Defoe brought in as big hitters in January and neither of them have lived up to the billing. But I think both of them will look like different players after a full pre-season in Glasgow and I fully expect them to become a major part of the next big step under Gerrard.

But the manager still needs to increase quality in other areas of his team. One more striker, one more midfielder and another defender. Guys who can become the real spine of his team. Guys who can provide the kind of backbone that was missing the other night against Aberdeen.”

Ferguson is currently the manager of Kelty Hearts.
