Four weeks after being given a two match retrospective ban from the SFA Allan McGregor has announced his retirement from international football.

The Ibrox keeper has become Scotland’s first choice keeper under Alex McLeish this season but won’t be available for the international double header coming up against Kazakhstan and San Marino.

McGregor was given a lifetime ban from international football after disciplinary breaches while Craig Levein was in charge but was welcomed back into the fold without any explanation.

The veteran Ibrox keeper escaped punishment from Bobby Madden for a brutal attack on Lewis Ferguson but was given a two match retrospective suspension.

Last week McLeish discussed the issue telling the Evening Times:

Are there any concerns about Allan? “No, I don’t think so. The SFA are the governing body and we are all part of it but no, I don’t think so. That would be like me back in the day going up for one of my disciplinary hearings and shouting ‘Jock, Mr Stein – that’s it, I’m not playing for Scotland any more’. That won’t be an issue with Allan, he is bigger than that.”

McLeish was clearly out of the loop with that news and is now likely to turn to Celtic duo Scott Bain and Craig Gordon.

The former Hearts and Sunderland keeper was the first choice under Gordon Strachan, Bain was called up and picked up his first full cap during the mis season trip to Peru and Mexico.
