Steven Gerrard had the look and attitude of a man thoroughly sickened by the inability of the players he has either bought or selected after the 1-1 draw at Hibs.

All through the week the rookie boss bought into the hype around Alfredo Morelos, reaching a peak with ‘reported interest’ from Borussia Dortmund while Managing Director told a gathering of the gullible in New Zealand that the striker was worth at least £20m!

Morelos picked up a pay rise for his part in the panto then missed a handful of chances as another two points were lost to Hibs. In three attempts Sevco have still to beat Hibs, in five games against Aberdeen they have won once.

Finding positives where none exist is one of the hardest parts of being involved with in-house club media, last night Gerrard wasn’t in the mood for talking up points dropped for the fifth or sixth time this season is similar careless fashion.

Asked if the key learning point was that they had to take their chances Gerrard said: “No, no, no, no, no no. We ‘ave to realise that, you know, you can ‘ave one of these a season, maybe two, maybe two. You will get away with one, maybe two but this ‘as ‘appened five or six times now so it is my responsibility, I will take the blame.

It’s an interesting challenge for me moving forward, to try and improve the quality in the final third or find different solutions in the final third.”

Asked what other positives he could take away from the game Gerrard gave a one word answer ‘none’!

That final comment could see Jermain Defoe come in for Morelos on Tuesday against Aberdeen which would demolish the delusion that the Colombian is some sort of in-demand goal hunter. In January only one club was interested in the Bournemouth veteran.

Searching desperately for something upbeat it was suggested to Gerrard that Tuesday’s replay against Aberdeen would be a great night.

Again Gerrard had a blunt reply: “It will only be a great night if we win, I’m very frustrated and disappointed in tonight’s result. Especially after the first 45, I’m finding it hard to find reasons, it will be a fantastic night but only if we get the job done.”
