Alex McLeish has been left his job as Scotland manager.

A meeting of the SFA board this morning discussed the performances under the former Aston Villa boss with the 3-0 defeat from Kazakhstan causing alarm bells to go off.

McLeish has led Scotland to the play-offs for the European Championships but coming out on top of a mini-group that involved Israel and Albania hardly inspired confidence.

A burst of five goals in two matches from James Forrest ensured that Scotland emerged into two play-off rounds.

At the end of last season there was some friction with Celtic as McLeish attempted to get a full strength squad to travel for friendlies in Mexico and Peru despite the short close season before Champions League qualifiers.

After failing to qualify for the World Cup play-offs in 2017 the SFA decided to sack Gordon Strachan, after being rejected by Michael O’Neil and Walter Smith they turned to McLeish who had walked out on Scotland in 2009.

Steve Clarke will be the fans favourite to become the next manager but the Kilmarnock boss is likely to have strong reservations over working with the SFA.

Assistant coaches Peter Grant and James McFadden have also lost their jobs, Scotland’s next match is at home to Cyprus on June 8 in a Euro 2020 qualifier.

By the tone of the SFA statement it seems that McLeish has had his contract paid up or will continue to be paid until it expires.
