The agent for Roberto Martinez has revealed that the Spaniard isn’t interested in becoming Celtic’s next manager.

With the best squad in Europe and the European Championships just over a year away it always seemed highly unlikely that Martinez would give that up to manage in Scotland.

A Scottish wife and the presence of Shaun Maloney on his coaching staff gave the story some credibility but after two weeks of whispering the former Everton boss can be counted out as a contender to manage Celtic.

The Sun reports:

However, former Motherwell midfielder Martinez’s agent Jesse De Preter has urged Celtic fans not to get their hopes up that the former Everton boss is Glasgow-bound.

He said: “Roberto always seems to be on the shortlist as soon as there is a vacancy at a big club but this is a false rumour about him going to Celtic.

“It seems to have come from the fact Roberto has a Scottish wife and he obviously has ties to the country. However, there’s nothing to see here and I would suggest the bookies review their odds.”

The Martinez rumour follows the same template as Marco Rose with the RB Salzburg boss about to move to Borussia Monchengladbach.

When there is a managerial vacancy there is no such thing as bad publicity with a distant link to Celtic eagerly discussed and speculated.

Andre Villas-Boas, Rafa Benitez and Michael O’Neil have all been in the spotlight over the last month but most supporters know that barring any massive mishap Neil Lennon will be in charge next season.

If Celtic beat Aberdeen on Sunday the season will extend to May 25 with the first match of next season being played on July 9 or 10.
