Mikael Lustig has told AIK that he will make a decision on his future at the end of the season.
The Swedish side have been tracking Lustig all season but it seems that the defender is looking to extend his stay in Scotland.
Celtic had a 12 month option to extend his contract on it’s current terms but appear to have let that lapse suggesting that they weren’t prepared to match his current wages.
With a high profile international career signing Lustig would be a major coup for any Swedish club with AIK director Bjorn Wesstrom explaining the situation to The Sun.
We have confirmed that we have spoken to Mikael Lustig about a transfer. I have to say we are not close to an agreement yet. If we were close to a deal, the player would have spoken to the manager and he hasn’t done that yet.
What Mikael needs to decide first and foremost is whether he wants to stay at Celtic or not.
As I understand it, he wants to concentrate on ending the season with Celtic as strongly as possible. He has a job to do there. Both him and Celtic.
When Mikael indicates to us what he has decided to do with regards to his future, we will take the next step. So the situation is that we have made contact, but we are not in the next phase yet.
Lustig had lost his place in the Celtic side to Jeremy Toljan but has returned to favour under Neil Lennon and is expected to start tomorrow’s Scottish Cup semi-final against Aberdeen.
Celtic signed the defender on a Bosman deal from Rosenborg in January 2012.
