Neil Lennon is planning ahead for next season with Leigh Griffiths fully on board.

The caretaker boss was understood to be in charge until the end of the current campaign but makes it clear in his comments about Griffiths that he is expecting to remain in charge going into next season.

No date or timescale was ever given for Lennon’s appointment, last Friday ahead of the Scottish Cup semi-final with Aberdeen he did mention being in charge until told otherwise.

Celtic’s final match of this season is on May 25 against Hearts, Scotland then have matches on June 8 and 11 with Celtic quickly back in training before the first pre-season match in Austria on June 26.

Griffiths hasn’t played at any level since early December but Lennon is looking on the June 8 match with Cyprus as a stepping stone to working with the striker when Celtic return for pre-season training nine days later.

I think he’ll be fit for the qualifiers, it would do him good,” the Celtic caretaker told the Daily Record.

It would be nice for Scotland and it would be nice for me to have a quality striker added to the one I’ve got. He won’t be a million miles away, put it that way.

And he could do that and come right back into pre-season with us – why not? The qualifier is June 11 and we are back on June 17 so there is no reason why he can’t go and play for Scotland and then come back into training with us.

He has missed a lot of football and it is not through a bad injury or anything like that. He needs to catch up.”
