With interest, alleged of course, in Alfredo Morelos cooling rapidly Scott Arfield is the new in-demand Ibrox favourite.

A weekend hat-trick against a charitable Motherwell side has apparently brought the 30-year-old to the attention of Southampton who have previously signed Victor Wanyama, Virgil van Dijk and Stuart Armstrong from Scotland.

The Daily Mail reports:

Arfield already has vast Premier League experience with Burnley, and Southampton believe his signing would represent a risk-free swoop as they have proven success of recent years with the recruitment of Stuart Armstrong and Steven Davis from the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers are likely to value Arfield around the £3million mark.

Had they been inclined Southampton could have put in an offer for Arfield last summer after his Burnley deal expired.

After spells at Huddersfield and Burnley the midfielder opted for the security of a four year deal back in Scotland after starting his career with Falkirk.

While Steven Gerrard makes announcements about bringing in quality for next season the reality is that funds are needed to make ends meet for the current season expenditure.

A loan from Close Brothers was required to see out the season while Mike Ashley returns to court tomorrow looking for close to £10m compensation for being cut out of the merchandising bonanza created by the arrival of the Liverpool legend at Ibrox.
