Paul Murray has emerged from the shadows to warn Ibrox fans that stopping Celtic from winning 10-in-a-row isn’t the be all and end all.

Last week Dave King claimed that his club was within tangible reach of dominating Scottish football but his former boardroom colleague takes a much more realistic view.

Murray stood arm in arm with the South African based businessman when he took control of the blue room in March 2015 but slipped away a year ago with only a Petrofac Cup win to celebrate from his board room days.

Despite the promises of King no mainstream bank will touch the club account, Close Brothers have provided the missing millions for the second season running as the club awaits what could be a highly expensive bill from Sports Direct for breaking their merchandising contact.

According to many the gap is closing but with Celtic’s turnover three times more than their city ‘rivals’ Murray delivered a sobering assessment that is completely at odds with last week’s statement from King.

Following a book launch last week at Ibrox The Herald reports:

For us, as a fan, I think we have to focus on ourselves. We can’t control what other teams do.

We’ve got to get Rangers to the best level we can get them at. And I don’t think anyone on the board is going to be taking undue risks to do that financially after everything that has happened to the club over the years.

I would think it’s a question of focusing on Rangers and trying to get them to be the best they can be. If that leads to stopping Celtic, then it is a consequence of that. But we can’t really control what Celtic do, or indeed any other team.

The other things is that football comes in cycles. When we were winning nine-in-a-row, you could never see an end to it but teams break up, players leave, managers leave, people lose form, injuries and suspensions come along.

The ‘cycle’ argument is one for the truly desperate, at some stage in the past supporters of Renton, Dumbarton, Queens Park and Vale of Leven used it to explain away losing a Scottish Cup Final.

Football directors are charged with ensuring that everything possible is done to bring success on the pitch, normally by securing the best commercial deals and making the right appointments in terms of management.

With King promising domination of Scottish football and Murray looking to cycles only the deluded and gullible will be taking comfort from those thoughts.
