The drawn out saga to remove Alex McLeish from his job as Scotland manager is underway after he met with SFA Chief Executive Ian Maxwell in London.

Last Thursday the Daily Record claimed that McLeish could be gone within 24 hours but while the SFA briefed that no meeting was planned the substance of the story wasn’t denied.

This morning The Sun picked up on the story:

SunSport understands the under-fire Scotland boss met chief executive Ian Maxwell in London for a crunch summit — and is now waiting to learn his fate.

McLeish still has the support of SFA president and long-term friend Alan McRae.

But the SFA could still make a change ahead of the next double-header with Cyprus and Belgium in June.

The original Record story made a number of mentions to health concerns over McLeish and claimed that there had been a ‘deeply concerning episode’ before last month’s international against San Marino.

McLeish has been in charge of Scotland since last February. Despite securing a play-off route to the European Championships through the Nations League there has been deep concerns about the defeats away to Israel and Kazakhstan.

Scotland flew out three days before the match with Kazakhstan but lost 3-0 to the side rated 117 in the FIFA rankings, three days later Russia comfortably won 4-0 away to Kazakhstan.

James Forrest and Oli Burke were dropped for the win over San Marino with Kieran Tierney travelling to Kazakhstan before being ruled out due to injury.
