Craig Thomson will referee Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final between Celtic and Aberdeen.

It has been suggested that Thomson was falling out of favour but he is the most experienced ref in the Scottish game with vast vast experience of Hampden occasions.

His last SPFL match was the March 9 goal-less draw between Celtic and Aberdeen, it does seem strange that his only match since then was Saturday’s Championship match between Ayr Utd and Inverness Caley Thistle.

Last May he issued Shay Logan with a red card after the final whistle of the final SPFL fixture after the Dons defender gestured to Celtic fans and shouted at players after his side had secured second place.

Tory MP Douglas Ross will take time off from the Brexit concerns of his constituents to run the line. There will be no additional assistants behind the goal which partly contributed to the farce in 2015 when Steven McLean and Alan Muir both missed a clear hand ball by Josh Meekings.

David Roome, a close friend of Bobby Madden will be the other assistant, Roome and Ross were the assistant referees at Ibrox in December that failed to notice any of Alfredo Morelos’ attacks on Celtic players.
