Steven McLean has handed Celtic a treble boost for next Saturday’s match against Kilmarnock after sending off three Killie players in the 1-0 defeat from Aberdeen yesterday.

Four years ago McLean was presenting Inverness Caley Thistle with a place in the final of the Scottish Cup, yesterday his decision making was giving Aberdeen a massive boost in the race for third place and a guaranteed place in next season’s Europa League qualifiers.

Yesterday Kirk Broadfoot, Stuart Findlay and Rory McKenzie all saw red and are automatically suspended for the next match- away to Celtic.

Steve Clarke slaughtered McLean’s display as ‘worst refereeing performance I’ve ever seen in my career’ which isn’t going to do him any favours when he appeals against the straight red cards given to Broadfoot and McKenzie.

The Killie boss ventured into new territory when he questioned the integrity of a referee because his father had played over 500 games for Kilmarnock.

In England match officials have to declare if they have an interest or connection to a particular club, the SFA have avoided any such declarations with match officials from Glasgow and Lanarkshire dominating the big match appointments.
