Less than two years ago the SFA announced that retrospective action couldn’t be taken against players for gestures.

The rule change came to light after it was claimed that Josh Windass had gestured at Partick Thistle fans in the fixture before a Glasgow derby.

Yesterday the SFA announced that Scott Brown has been charged with ‘not acting in the best interests of Scottish football’.

With no real details revealed about the charge it has been assumed that it was for a gesture made at opposing fans after the final whistle. Video footage from Sky Sports and BBC Scotland has failed to identify the incident.

In September 2017 Windass was accused of gesturing at Partick Thistle supporters but since the incident was missed by referee Willie Collum.

The Scotsman explained:

There had been speculation that Windass would be banned for Saturday’s Old Firm game after he reacted to supporters who would not return the ball for a Rangers throw-in.

However, it has emerged that, after the involvement of PFA Scotland and the Coaches and Managers Association, rule 200 – which covers retrospective action for on-field offences – was amended to remove gestures and actions towards the crowd

An SFA spokesman said: “The only cause for retrospective action now is for violent conduct, serious foul play or spitting missed by the match officials.”

After being informed of the charge against Brown a Celtic spokesman announced that the club would vigorously defend the action.
