Davie Hay wants to see Patrick Roberts back at Celtic.

The winger sparkled during Celtic’s Invincible season under Brendan Rodgers but has failed to follow that up with his return last season hampered by injury while he has failed to make an impact at Girona.

Roberts has one year left on his contract at Manchester City, at the age of 22 it’s vital that his career kicks on rather than continues to drift away from the early promise that earned him his move from Fulham.

The winger is a firm favourite of the Celtic support with the next manager assured of a surge in popularity if they ‘bring him home’.

In the Evening Times Hay explains:

ONE man that certainly could and probably should be a consideration for Celtic this summer is Patrick Roberts.

The winger hasn’t really hit the heights we all know that he is capable of in Girona on loan from Manchester City this season, but he did exceptionally well at Celtic in his spell up in Scotland and he is still young at 22.

Whether it would be a possibility or not I’m not sure, because he will be going into the final year of his contract with Manchester City, but he really enjoyed his time up here and I’m sure the player himself would be open to the possibility of a return.

His second season wasn’t as successful as his first, but he got an injury and then the form of James Forrest meant that he couldn’t get back into the team regularly.

I think that the two of them could play in the same team and maybe switch flanks. With Scott Sinclair’s future looking uncertain, he is one who would be almost certain to have an impact.

Roberts has managed just 550 minutes of action for Girona this season, made up of six starts and 12 substitute appearances. In each of the matches that he has started he has been replaced.

There appears to be little interest among clubs in the EPL for a player with Roberts’ attacking instincts although Brendan Rodgers could well make an enquiry about taking him to Leicester City.
