Departing Celtic defender not short of options

|

Emilio Izaguirre has rejected a one year contract extension with Celtic and is on the look out for a club in Europe, Mexico or the USA.

The defender rejoined Celtic in August after a season in Saudi Arabia and played in 19 matches under Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon.

Honduran newspaper Diez claims that the players’ agent is looking for a new club which shouldn’t prove too difficult for the 33-year-old who collected seven title winning medals as a Celtic player.

Izaguirre was among the first batch of players signed by Lennon in 2010 which included Gary Hooper, Anthony Stokes, Charlie Mulgrew, Joe Ledley and Beram Kayal.

In his first season the left-back picked up various Player of the Year awards but never quite recovered top form after breaking his ankle early in his second season at Celtic.

Kieran Tierney’s fitness has been a concern in the second half of the season but Jonny Hayes has become the preferred deputy with Izaguirre’s last Celtic appearance coming in the 1-0 win over Kilmarnock at the end of April.
