Five days after rushing into a media conference at Hampden Peter Lawwell is still waiting to confirm Neil Lennon as Celtic’s permanent manager.

A discussion with the caretaker in the showers at Hampden was all that the chief executive needed before he made his second media appearance of the year. The first was being doorstepped by Sky Sports on February 26 during the handover phase between Brendan Rodgers and Lennon.

There was no expectation from supporters of an announcement at Hampden but five days later with no follow up Celtic fans are getting curious as to what is going on behind the scenes.

Lennon has been to the Tennents Bar, back and forward to Marbella, met with Kris Commons and his agent Martin Reilly with his Celtic offer still unsigned.

Things may well be progressing well behind the scenes but time is something that Celtic are very short of. Pre-season training starts on June 17, the first match of next season is on July 9/10 with many players looking on those dates as part of their holidays.

Time is at a premium for Celtic, an announcement on the name of the manager was expected this week but Lawwell’s media move on Saturday has slightly moved the goal-posts.

Some quick decisions are needed, once the loan players and those out of contract are moved on there remains half a dozen players at the club that have made little contribution to this season.

Those players need moved on at the same time as first team starters come in with defenders a priority.

Covering Saturday’s announcement the Celtic website reported Lawwell saying.

At this point, in terms of looking at the squad, there’s nobody better that I’ve worked with who has an eye for a player, so we’re delighted to announce that he’s been offered the job, and over the next few days, we will work out the details.

There’s no better candidate, and Neil has earned the right to be the permanent manager of Celtic, based on our recent performances and also who he is as a manager.

Celtic had 23 days between the Scottish Cup Final and the first training session of next season, as Lennon has stated he needs every session to get his ideas over to the players.

Patrick Roberts’ move to Norwich today confirms that the transfer market is underway, until Lennon is confirmed as manager it looks like the waiting and wondering is set to continue.
