Steven Gerrard doesn’t expect Rennes defender Mexer to join his Ibrox Revolution.

Just ahead of the launch of season ticket sales the Mozambique born defender was given the big licks with comparisons with John Terry and Jean-Alain Boumsong.

Last week Gerrard was pictured with the defender after jetting out for a not so secret spying mission but today the Ibrox boss tried to put a gloss on being rejected by the defender.

“We are looking for centre-backs and Mexer is a good player who we admire but what I’m led to believe is that he’ll be playing his football in France next year,” the Ibrox boss told today’s media conference. “Don’t take that as facts, that’s just what I’m hearing through the grapevine.”

Despite going on record as looking to bring in quality game changers there is little sign of money being made available in the summer.

Jordan Jones and Jake Hatie have signed pre-contract agreements while Steve Davis and Jermain Defoe will provide a massive drain on wages.

Despite reaching the group stage of the Europa League the additional wages to pay for Gerrard and his new signings meant that Dave King had to take out a loan from Close Brothers in February to see out the season.

Until the full extent of the compensation due to Mike Ashley is established it’s unlikely that any transfer fees will be paid with out of contract Scottish based players the most likely squad additions.
