African defender Mexer has snubbed the chance to join the Gerrard Revolution in favour of a four year contract with Bordeaux.

A goal against Paris Saint Germain in the final of the French Cup was enough for the 30 year old to be touted as a top transfer target just as the Ibrox side launched their season ticket sales campaign.

Gerrard obliged by flying out to France and was pictured alongside Mexer as another step on the way towards following Bruno Alves, Pip Senderos and Joe Worral as the warrior defender needed at the back.

Usually these stories are allowed to bubble along for a few weeks before falling off the radar or being replaced by a fresh moonbeam but last night Bordeaux spoiled the script by announcing a four year deal for the defender.

Despite the repeated appeals of Gerrard to bring more quality to the club so far only Jordan Jones and Max Hastie on free transfers have been added although Motherwell are due a development fee of around £300,000 for Hastie.

It’s believed that free agent Greig Stewart is another transfer target.
