As English football drools over Aston Villa winning their £180m shoot-out with Derby County agents and players across the game will be rubbing their hands with glee.

None more so than Ross McCormack who made three substitute appearances in the SPFL last season during a disastrous loan spell with Motherwell.

At the same time as Celtic signed Moussa Dembele from Fulham, Villa opted to spend £12m on signing McCormack from the same club.

Since signing his four year contract the 32-year-old has been sent out on loan to Nottingham Forest, Melbourne City, Central Coat Mariners, where he was a team-mate of Usain Bolt, before turning up at Fir Park in January.

John McGinn scored the winning goal for Villa at Wembley with another Scot celebrating that goal just as enthusiastically as the Daily Record revealed:

McCormack is set to see his wage rocket up to £70,000 a week despite having not played a league game for the club since a 1-0 defeat at Wolves in January 2017.

The Scot has been on loan spells at Nottingham Forest, Melbourne City, Central Coast Mariners and Motherwell since then, but is still contracted to Villa for another year.

As much as £4million of Aston Villa ‘s reported £180million windfall from their promotion back to the Premier League will be paid to players who have barely kicked a ball for them this season.

Hibs are also in for a slice of the windfall as part of the transfer fee they negotiated when McGinn was sold to Villa last summer for an initial fee of £2.5m.
