Chris Sutton believes that Celtic’s best news of the weekend arrived on Saturday morning.

In a short website statement it was revealed that Lee Congerton had left his post as Head of Recruitment, soon afterwards Leicester City announced his arrival to the same post.

Over the last three transfer windows Celtic’s recruitment has been dreadful with only Scott Bain making a worthwhile contribution.

The rest would be quickly forgotten if they weren’t so expensive, step forward Marvin Compper, Charly Musonda, Jack Hendry, Youssouf Mulumbu, Oli Burke, Timo Weah and Jeremy Toljan.

Loan players need wages and often come with a loan fee, despite those arrivals Celtic are still highly dependent on a core of players that were there before Brendan Rodgers arrived with fresh faces badly needed.

In the Daily Record Sutton reflected on Celtic’s weekend:

No-one should be deluded into thinking everything is rosy at Celtic. They have shown character to get over the line but they have been flat this season and the rot had long set in under Brendan Rodgers.

The recruitment has been woeful for a couple of seasons, which is why Lee Congerton heading off to Leicester City really is a case of good riddance.

The head of recruitment going was the result of the weekend for Celtic.

Congerton’s dreadful transfer record has created a heck of a mess to mop up in the summer after two years of woeful signings.

With the first round of the Champions League qualifiers less than two months away Celtic will be expected to strengthen the side quickly as soon as the transfer window opens.
