Celtic linked with £4m Danish central defender

Celtic have been linked with a £4m move for Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen.

The Huddersfield defender has a year left on his contract and is keen to move on after two seasons playing in the EPL.

A report in Examiner Live reads like something put together by an agent keen to get a move:

Celtic’s hunt for Huddersfield Town ace Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen appears to be gathering momentum.

The Scottish treble winners have been linked with the Danish central defender since the Terriers were relegated from the Premier League.

Even though Zanka remains under contract at the John Smith’s Stadium for another year, he has made no secret of his desire to pursue another challenge and Town have given him the nod to do just that.

Celtic continue to be reported as keen on adding the £4m Zanka to Neil Lennon’s squad and it’s easy to see why.

The 6ft 3in Zanka has 62 Premier League appearances to his name to add to more than 50 in the Champions League and Europa League with FC Copenhagen and PSV Eindhoven. He is a five-time winner of the Danish Superliga and Danish Cup, as well as a winner of the Dutch Super Cup (at Eindhoven).

After losing Filip Benkovic and Dedryck Boyata at the end of last season central defence is an area that Celtic need strengthened in.

Kris Ajer joined the squad that flew to Austria yesterday but last week at Lennoxtown Jack Hendry and Jozo Simunovic were the only central defenders with first team experience.

Stephen Welsh and Liam Morrison are with the squad in Austria and are likely to get the chance to impress during the three match trip.

Tomorrow Celtic face Pinkafeld in their first friendly of the season.
