Confusion over Connell fee

Confusion reigns over the transfer fee of Luca Connell.

The Bolton midfielder spoke to the Irish Mirror about what an honour it would be to play for Celtic which seems to have caused alarm at his current club.

UEFA has a sliding scale of development/compensation fees that clubs are entitled to when a player moves on such as the £500,000 that Celtic paid Fulham for Moussa Dembele in 2016.

Connell has refused to sign a professional contract at Bolton meaning that he remains on the wages of other trainees/scholars despite making a dozen top team appearances.

The FA has a compensation fee for moves within England which would be greater than cost to Celtic although there is a further complication with administrators in charge of Bolton looking to protect the creditors by matching outgoings with whatever cash they can bring in on a weekly basis.

The sympathetic Bolton News reports:

The in-demand Wanderers midfielder is contracted as a third-year scholar until next summer and CANNOT be poached for a development fee of £250,000, as widely reported, before then.

Tellingly there is no mention of what the transfer fee would be, the article adds:

Several sides, including Wolves, Norwich, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United and Burnley, Brighton, Southampton have been linked with him in the past but last week it is understood Celtic made a firm enquiry last week.

Until the status of his scholar contract is established and the position of Bolton in administration is cleared it seems unlikely that any transfer will go through denying the 18-year-old a massive pay hike and tidy signing on fee.
