Celtic report back for pre-season today but for one player the coming weeks will be absolutely vital for his career.
Leigh Griffiths hasn’t played a competitive game since December after taking time out to deal with what was described as personal issues.
Towards the end of March he returned to Lennoxtown but was never pictured training with the first team squad and apparently gave up a summer holiday to continue working on his fitness.
In Neil Lennon he has a very sympathetic boss but equally the new hoops boss won’t be carrying any passengers as he attempts to stamp his own identity on the squad that he inherited from Brendan Rodgers.
Griffiths appears to have been given plenty of help about whatever private issues he has to deal with, Rodgers regularly passed comment on his fitness issues which prevented the striker from fulfilling his potential.
Supporters love the guy that sticks the ball in the net, Griffiths will have plenty of backing from the stands as a person, as a striker he can have a pivotal role in the season ahead.
Tomorrow Celtic will discover their opponents in the first qualifying round of the Champions League. In previous seasons the goals of Griffiths have been vital in reaching the riches of the group phase.
Next week Celtic face Pinkfeld in their first pre-season match, a performance from Griffiths will be expected with the hope that the goals start to flow to mark his return to the fold.
