Celtic have terminated the contract of Youssouf Mulumbu.

The midfielder was signed as a free agent at the end of the summer transfer window but only made three first team appearances before going out on loan to Kilmarnock in January.

It was reported that Mulumbu had signed a two year contract but this morning the Daily Mail has revealed that the 32-year-old is no longer at the club:

The Congolese international had been expected to return to Parkhead after the completion of his loan spell at Kilmarnock in the latter part of last season.

However, Celtic have activated a break clause in the two-year deal announced by the club when they signed the player in August of last year. Mulumbu is currently in Egypt representing his country at the Africa Cup of Nations. However, Lennon admits the 32-year-old will not be back at Celtic Park.

‘Mulumbu is a free,’ said the manager. ‘He is away, so there is not a future here for him.’

Since the end of last season Scott Allan, Dedryck Boyata, Dorus de Vries, Emilio Izaguirre, Cristian Gamboa, Mikael Lustig and Mulumbu have left the club taking a significant chunk off the wage bill.

After watching the way that a very youthful side performed in the second half against Pinkafeld it is clear that there are plenty of back-up options already at the club allowing Lennon to concentrate on bringing in players ready to make a first team impact.

Luca Connell and Christopher Jullien are expected to play in a reserve match against St Gallen on Tuesday afternoon with Lennon looking to give as many players as possible 90 minutes playing time.
